CANAL+ Group: Making engagement a driver of cohesion, pride, and impact

CANAL+ Group is a major player in entertainment and media, covering the entire audiovisual chain from content creation to broadcasting and streaming. It stands out for its global footprint and its ambition to "create" and "share" stories that resonate worldwide. Alongside its commercial activities, the group maintains a firm commitment to CSR: for several years, it has been structuring engagement policies focused on diversity, inclusion, the environment, and cultural access for all.

Structuring global engagement to match CSR ambitions

At CANAL+, engagement is nothing new. In 2019, the group’s CSR policy was restructured to bring more strength, consistency, and structure to managing the social and environmental impacts of our activities—key issues for the group that it has historically invested in, both in France and internationally. Numerous actions and awareness campaigns have been undertaken, both externally and internally, with ever-increasing employee mobilization. In 2023, the group decided to go even further by offering a skills-based volunteering program.

It is against this backdrop that CANAL+ Solidarity was born, built in line with the group’s societal and environmental commitments and designed for all employees, in every country. With the support of Komeet, the group is structuring this program on a large scale by leveraging a proven platform and methodology. Championed from the outset by the Management Board and co-created by HR, internal communications, and CSR, the program embodies a strong ambition: to make engagement a driver of cohesion, pride, and shared impact on a global scale.

An engagement dynamic built around 3 structural pillars

Clear support from top management

  • The program was announced to all employees via a message from the Chairman of the Group’s Management Board.
  • Involvement from general management at each rollout, with a message sent to the teams.
  • The Executive Committee got involved right from the launch through a solidarity-based team building event.
  • One mission was carried out by the Studiocanal executive committee (the group's film and television studio), and another by the entire HR team (over 100 employees in France and internationally).
  • The 150 members of the HR team then took part in a half-day of collective engagement.

Cross-functional governance designed from the outset

  • The program is led by a trio from HR, CSR/Foundation, and Internal Communications, who co-facilitate initiatives throughout the year.
  • Unions were consulted beforehand, with the framework presented to the Social and Economic Committee (CSE) prior to its rollout.
  • The international network of HR directors and CSR leads acts as a key relay for adapting and activating the program in each country.

Engagement efforts to build collective momentum

  • An internal survey was distributed two months before the launch in France and its overseas territories to understand expectations, raise awareness, and get teams on board, with nearly 800 respondents.
  • A custom "non-profit forum" to launch the program with local organizations, attended by the Executive Board.
  • Video testimonials from committed employees are produced to bring the initiatives to life and inspire teams.
  • Team missions are regularly offered to strengthen cohesion and foster a sense of shared purpose.

Feedback

"With CANAL+ Solidarity, we are meeting a real need for engagement by making it easier to take action for social and environmental causes, while allowing everyone to leverage their skills through concrete experiences and meaningful encounters."

- Marine Schenfele,
CSR Director Europe and General Delegate of the Foundation

"Being able to offer employees the chance to engage in causes that matter to them during work hours is a great opportunity. Whether alone or in a group, in the field or online, occasionally or over the long term, there are many ways to help, and the impact is always there. CANAL+ Solidarity answers a quest for meaning at work and the need to feel useful, using our expertise (both hard and soft skills!) across all generations. It is a true driver of motivation, cohesion, and pride in working for a responsible and committed company."

- Ariane Esfandi,
Director of Internal Communications and Skills-based Sponsorship
